Food Poverty Project

Help 4 The Homeless is enormously grateful to our partners and supporters for the weekly donations of food and clothing. That began as part of our On the Street Project but has turned into a project on its own.

Once we started working with them we then found that we have more donations than we could use for the On the Street Project. We didn’t want to see them wasted and so we began working with other local community groups to identify poor families that we could help. So now we redistribute around 50 food parcels each week, worth over £50,000 per year, to those in food poverty in our local area. We are delighted to be part of a community response to meeting local needs and helping poorer families.

Food Poverty

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. In Europe, only Italy has more inequality than the UK. We are number sixth in the world, behind the US, Israel, China, India and Italy.

If the wealth of the super rich continues to grow in the UK at the rate it has been, by 2035, the wealth of the richest 200 families will be larger than the whole UK GDP (Equality Trust 2023).

6%

The Trussell Trust estimates that 6% of the population live in food poverty in the UK.

9%

The Trussell Trust estimates that 9% of children live in food poverty in the UK.

Can you help us?

We have a small team of volunteers collecting and bagging up spare food for redistribution – but the need continues to grow and we do need more people to help. If you live within 10 miles of Borehamwood and have some spare time during the day, please get in touch.
