“I found my place behind the scenes”
When I had to leave the family home for the sake of my mental health, I struggled to afford food for myself and my children. That’s when I first met Lloyd and Shoshana through the charity’s work supporting local families.
Sadly, after two years in the family court system, my mental health declined to the point where I was homeless for several nights. At 47, I was diagnosed with ADHD, and I’m still awaiting my autism assessment. If someone with 30 years of professional experience in facilities management can end up homeless, it can happen to anyone.
That’s why I choose to volunteer my time rather than simply donate money — it feels more personal, and I know my contribution is genuinely appreciated.
Because of my neurological condition, working on the handout team in central London became overwhelming due to the sheer number of people in need. Instead of walking away, I found a different way to help. Now, I’m part of the van-packing and food collection team — a vital role, even if it’s behind the scenes.
